White supremacist opens fire at Holocaust museum, kills guard

Tragedy struck the nation’s capital today as an 88-year-old white supremacist opened fire at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, killing security guard Stephen Tyrone Johns, a six-year veteran of the museum and a hero who died in the line of duty. Here is his picture:

Holocaust Museum Shooting

Please remember Mr. Johns and his family in your prayers.

The gunman, who himself was shot, is James von Brunn, a WWII veteran who has been linked to white supremacist and neo-Nazi sites, has spewed racist anti-Semitic and anti-Christian rhetoric, and is apparently a 9/11 Truther. He also has a record of bizarre crimes, threatening to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve Board and spending six years in prison for the plot. He is a crazed hate-filled maniac who I hope receives the full brunt of the legal system.

Unfortunately, people will make still make use of a tragedy to score political points. DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas tried to tie the gunman to the Tea Party movement, and I’ve heard and read several folks trying to make the claim that this invalidates conservative criticism of the broad-brushed DHS report.

People, please. Michelle Malkin has it right when she says the gunman is neither “left” nor “right,” but just plain looney. Don’t try to vilify a set of political opinions just because of the caricature you associate them with. Murder is murder, and no sane person, liberal or conservative, would use their ideology as a justification for the heinous act.

Update: For those who still need reinforcement about the gunman’s lack of easily defined political beliefs, there’s evidence that he also was keeping his eye on the conservative Weekly Standard and Fox News. Psychopaths don’t really require an ideology ascribed to them, so stop shrieking about vindication and recognize the sheer inhumanity and senselessness of the tragedy.
