Can I get fries with that?

A Maryland robotics company is developing a steam-powered robot that fuels itself in part by consuming organic material in the environment around it (Heads-up from Hot Air). Robotic Technology Inc. calls the system an Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot, or EATR for short, and notes that the biomass being consumed might be animal or human corpses in a war zone.

EATR will start off being a lovable little wheeled box harmlessly munching grass, but who knows? They might go all the way and turn it into a monstrous eating machine striking fear in the hearts of enemy soldiers as they watch it feast on the hearts of their fallen comrades.

Either way, it might be a good idea to keep tight control over the targeting systems.

Update: A special welcome to all you new readers from Finland!

Also, it now appears that a Robotic Technology Inc. scientist has given emphatic assurances that EATR is a vegetarian only. Dr. Bob Finkelstein says the robot would be able to distinguish between different types of fuels, and noted, “If it’s not on the menu, it’s not going to eat it.”

Ah, but that all depends on who writes the menu, doesn’t it, Doctor?
