Above is the actual image of a molecule of pentacene, captured by atomic force microscopy by a team at IBM.

Forgive this science geek’s momentary wonder at the actual physical representation of what we all saw via ball-and-stick models in chemistry. Images like this and those of the Hubble Space Telescope capture the power of science to see into the inner reaches of microspace and the vast unimaginable depths of outer space.

It makes you realize the universe is at once a thing of great order and unimaginable mystery.
