New low in CNN poll packing

Posted on September 10, 2009

CNN’s Political Ticker has a brand new poll proclaiming a double digit post-speech jump for Obama’s plan. Boy, what great news, right? There’s only one small problem:

The sample of speech-watchers in this poll was 45 percent Democratic and 18 percent Republican. Our best estimate of the number of Democrats in the voting age population as a whole indicates that the sample is about 8-10 points more Democratic than the population as a whole.

At least CNN has the decency to say they overrepresented Democrats, but don’t you think 18% is just a tad bit lowball for the percentage of Republicans in America? I guess CNN wanted to trumpet a big win from the President, and it doesn’t matter if they have to skew reality to do it. The takeaway from all this is that this poll means absolutely nothing, so it’s a waste of time to consider any implications from such an incredibly biased survey sample.
