The Republican candidate in the special election to fill Ted Kennedy’s Massachusetts Senate seat got a major boost today by raising over $1 million in a single day. The fundraising targets had been upped a few times in response to the overwhelming reaction to Scott Brown’s push for dollars. To be sure, a lot of it probably comes from out-of-state donors, but it remains an impressive feat.
In a state as blue as Massachusetts, Brown should continue to be perceived as an underdog against Democrat Martha Coakley, but after being down by 30 points a few months ago he has whittled her lead down to single digits, and a strong debate performance tonight may help him. It’s Massachusetts, so it’s very hard for me to go so far as to predict a win for him, but he has a fighting chance going into the election on Jan. 19th.
In closing, I enjoyed this clip from tonight’s debate (via Hot Air) of Brown reminding voters that it’s not Kennedy’s seat or the Democrats’ seat – it’s the people’s seat.
